Our Mission and Model

As our organization’s name suggests, Our Heart Speaks’ mission is to give a voice to those who have found themselves suddenly disabled or dealing with a new chronic illness or medical condition. Research has shown that healing occurs when  newly disabled or individuals living with chronic illness have the opportunity to express and share with others the frustration, anger, sadness, or other emotions they may be experiencing as a result of the challenges their health situation presents. Regardless of the medium of expression – a poem, an essay or story, a painting, a sculpture, etc. – voicing thoughts and feelings goes a long way in healing the heart and soul of both the artist or storyteller and fellow disabled or chronically ill individuals.

Ourheartspeaks.org provides an online platform for individuals of diverse cultures and ethnicities, residing throughout the world, to share the common initial pain and shock that often comes with new disability and serious illness, as well as lessons of resilience and hope. Through the heartfelt stories we are invited to experience how life goes on and can continue to be full of meaning and purpose. Our Heart Speaks’ large, diverse following on social media reinforces the ongoing global need and desire for individuals to heal and inspire themselves and others.

Our vision to help us re-imagine what is possible must extend beyond the patient and disability community, and include our health care providers who serve a critical role in this process. These stories are for them as well.

A young nonprofit, Our Heart Speaks is a vibrant, evolving volunteer initiative. We have no paid staff, and modest expenses, but ambitious goals to bring peer-to-peer therapeutic support to everyone who needs it. And, that’s where you and our #HealingVoiceofHope fundraising campaign come in!

Our Campaign Objectives

In keeping with both our mission and the mission of United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) observed globally on December 3, donations raised through our #HealingVoiceofHope campaign will be used to meet the following objectives:

  • Enhance our current website at ourheartspeaks.org to include the opportunity for members of the disability community to post comments and engage in discussion related to the powerful stories shared on our site. Help us to learn from and support each other.
  • Engage one or several individuals to serve as paid moderators of our online discussions to ensure that all posts by site visitors in response to the stories, or in response to the posts regarding stories, adhere to the positive, nurturing, inspirational, and supportive spirit of ourheartspeaks.org.
  • Produce 3 to 5 videos of newly disabled or chronically ill individuals- who are thriving despite their challenges – telling their inspirational stories of finding themselves faced with the challenges of a chronic illness or new disability and how they learned to successfully navigate life and not define themselves by their medical diagnosis.

Our Goal

To achieve the #HealingVoiceofHope campaign objectives above, Our Heart Speaks aims to raise a minimum of $15,000 during our campaign.

Won’t you help us achieve this goal? Your donation is very much appreciated.
